The Early Dance Consort's evening classes are a healthy, enjoyable and informative experience for anyone with a passion for early music, period drama, social history and the European dance heritage.
Beginners' Classes provide an introduction to a variety of dance types from this wealth of material. Through the year, students will learn the steps, figures and styles for dances from the courts of England, France, and Italy in the late 16th century, and for country dances from Cromwell's England. During the year, students will also be introduced to the noble dance developed at the court of Louis XIV of France, which formed the foundations for classical ballet. Previous experience is not required. Each class begins with a warm-up and gentle stretch, and the dances provide exercise ranging from mild to moderately vigorous, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Advanced Classes are for  students with  at least two years' experience in a range of early dance styles, including Italian Renaissance and French dance. Advanced students may be invited to participate in selected Early Dance Consort performances.
Students in both classes are provided with reference notes on the dances taught, their sources and the music used in class.
Costumed Balls held during the year provide opportunities for students to enjoy the dances they have learned in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and to invite friends and family to join in.
